“Shaping the nexteducation hub”

The CM of Himachal Pradesh tells Pramod Kumar why he is optimistic about the state

What has your government done for the availability of electricity?

Himachal Pradesh is perhaps one of the few states in the country where all the census villages have been provided with electricity. Last year we introduced a novel scheme of energy saving to benefit the domestic electricity consumer in the State. That scheme is Atal Bijli Bachat Yojna, under which we have provided four free CFL bulbs to each domestic consumer by spending Rs 80 crore.

What are the achievements in the roads and highways sector?

Roads are one of our top priorities. We are working on a plan to connect every village with a population of 250 or above by roads in the next two years. We have constructed about 2,000 km of roads in the last two years. Himachal now has a road length of over 31,000 km. We are also working to convert some state highways and national highways to Express Highways, including Parwanoo-Solan-Shimla.

What is the position of potable water? Every Census village in the state has got drinking water.

Are you satisfied with the law and order situation in your state?

There is total peace in the state.

Are you satisfied with the steps taken to root out corruption?

I am committed to providing a clean, transparent and responsive government to the people. e-governance is being given added priority and Himachal Pradesh's performance in this respect has been appreciated at the national level. We have introduced e-samadhan to solve the problems of the people and "Prashashan Janata Ke Dwar" where one can convey his woes directly to the chief minister.

What steps have been taken for the betterment of the farmers?

Over 90% of our population lives in rural areas and out of them 70% is dependent on agriculture. We have taken effective steps to strengthen the agrarian economy of the state. The farmers are being given 80 % subsidy for construction of poly houses and minor and sprinkle irrigation. This scheme aims at diversification of crops. Another scheme is the Rs .300-crore "Doodh Ganga"
