Celebrated poet, lyricist and secularist, Nida Fazli reflects on the state of Urdu poetry and its influence in the Subcontinent today. In conversation with Danish Reyaz…
What is the future of Urdu poetry and how can it reach a larger audience in India like it once did?
Urdu poetry belongs to Urdu and Urdu belongs to national politics while the national politics belongs to vote banks. Unless the languages are freed of political grip, their future can not be defined. It was a big mistake of our ancestors that they connected Urdu with Muslims only. Under the two – nation theory, the same language was handed over to Muslims and its ownership was established to them. When this mistake started to take place, Mohammad Ali Jinah was running his movement for Pakistan. At that time, Qazi Nazrul Islam was one of the greatest poets in West Bengal after Rabindranath Tagore. Though he was a Muslim, he was a Bengali poet. In the same way, Basheer Waikam from Tamilnadu was a Muslim but he wrote in Tamil. What I mean to say is that language does not belong to any particular religion. It only belongs to the regions and the regions inhabit people from different religions. The two-nation theory allied the language with religion. The politicos accepted this relationship among the religion and the language and started Muslim vote bank politics. Unless the language is freed from politics, its future will remain dark.
Does Urdu poetry inspire the current generation as it once did?
Any language or poetry does not play any role to shape up or to destabilise any country. It is only cricketers, political leaders and actors who possess a value in the nation’s graph. They are the people who influence the youngsters. As the couplet says:
Cricket, Neta, Actor Har Mehfil Ki Shaan Iskoolon Mein Qaid Hai Ghalib Ka Diwan
What should jihad mean for the young Muslim?
This jihad is a business. We believe what our eyes see, but the strings are being pulled by the people behind the scenes. 20-25 year-olds are transformed into killers and sent on suicide missions and we take them to be the real culprits. We should go in search of the real killers behind the scenes. They are the ones who have ruined these young minds. It is true that today youngsters are being misguided. The lessons which are being taught in Shishu Mandirs and Madrasas are not good for the youth of our country. Unfortunately, the youngsters are being trained with guns in the name of religion and they are ending their lives in futility. So it is necessary to control it.
How has Urdu poetry responded to the evolving challenges of the Muslim society?
Poetry is in no way influencing people. The words have no meaning. Today, the leaders of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are having their way and influencing people by their statements. The common man is silent. And if anything can give a befitting reply, it is the shoe of Baghdad. Everyone is listening to it. There is a need to import the Baghdad shoe in our country. Unless it is done, nothing can be done.
