Nine Jersey Nights...

Growing up away from one’s native land might not lend strong bonding with its culture, customs & rituals. At several occasions, for Indians living abroad too, save one festivity celebrated by all for its vibrancy, fervour and oft en romance is Dandiya Ras. The nine days of Navratras draw the NRIs closer to India as much to the divine Durga (Goddess of Power) Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth) & Saraswati (Goddess of Knowledge). For years, the flood plain of the Raritan River in New Jersey, on weekends of October has been greeting people mainly of the Gujarati community, swirling around in colourful attire at the famous Navratri festival of Edison, kept alive by the Indo- American Cultural Society. The festivity at New Jersey that started in 1990, attracted intolerance from the city council that introduced the ‘Public Entertainment Ordinance’ owing to a growing number of celebrants anywhere between 10,000 - 12,000 and growing decibels of sound and hours of celebration.

Lung ‘crack’ers!

Come Diwali and the festive spirit, like always, will lighten up faces, houses et al. Amid the glittering markets will be seen people indulging in binge shopping, exchanging gift s, throwing cards, partying and some even buying a new set of wheels. All in all, merry-making to the hilt and splurging on goodies, as if tomorrow will never come. Unfortunately, alongside lightened houses will once again be seen, the skies all lit up like a rain of fire…. Let’s not touch upon the air pollution part of it for a second – the fact that the smog post Diwali is why a lot of people develop breathing ailments leading to diseases like Asthma. Remember how last Diwali Buzo, your pet pal went scurrying for cover under the table, bed or whatever it could manage to squeeze himself under; crooning with fear at every loud bang of a cracker, as though it weren’t crackers but bombs exploding on the front? For the uninformed, let me inform that what might have seemed harmless to you, for your poor pet you love to love so much (and whose sense of hearing is many times more sensitive than yours) it’s exactly that - bomb explosions one after the other!

David or Goliath?

Despite the emotional drift, it’s a hard choice out there
“To achieve ‘satisfactory’ investment results is easier than most people realize; to achieve ‘superior’ results, harder than it looks,” noted economist Benjamin Graham – also hailed as the father of value investing – couldn’t have been more bang on right when he authored this magnanimously quoted statement. But before appreciating this statement, you have to decide whether you wish to be on that part of the barn that is ‘satisfactorily’ green, or the part that is ‘enviously’ and supremely greener! Surprisingly, many retail investors would prefer the ‘satisfactorily’ green side, given the lesser associated risk return ratio. And this ‘satisfactory’ side in the stock markets is surely the small and mid-cap stocks segment that has performed relatively better and stabler in a market whenever there were depressingly negative returns. So, why have the large-cap stocks moved en masse, whether up or down?

New dress up games

Walk into a swanky mall or pass by a high street in that up market area in your city and what do you see? Big banners staring at you – 50% off , two plus three free, scratch and win a Mercedes et al. Hordes of haute couture players are clamouring to grab your eye-balls with their latest offerings. Apparel major Raymond, for instance, has joined hands with Grotto SpA of Italy to launch the ritzy up market jeans brand – Gas. Th e company is opening exclusive Gas outlets in the capital to entice the chic consumers. However, Raymond is not treading down an easy path, considering Arvind, with over 20 foreign brands in its portfolio, is firmly entrenched in the Indian soil and is seeking more exclusive tie-ups with global brands. The company will unleash a new collection for the period of October-November. “This year, too, you will see many of our new launches and October will be the perfect time for such launches,” feels Sumeet Yadav, VP, Arvind Brands.

Just try & stay away!

Lucrative offers & rural penetration are on the radar of Indian consumer durable majors
“The Indian consumer durables sector always performs well during the festive season... The industry records unusually high sales during the 3-4 month period,” discloses Shushmul Maheshwari, CEO, RNCOS, a market research consultancy. He adds that while on an average, the business done by the industry during this period is around 40% of total business done in the year, for the upcoming festival season, industry is expected to perform better. “They may report an 18-20% higher sale over the previous year,” he says. Maheshwari’s optimism is not misplaced. Increased advertising budgets, aggressive promotion schemes & growing consumer loans in the economy are only some of the indicators forecasting a delightful season of sales for biggies in the segment. Rising disposable incomes have already seen the sector witness a 20% increase in advertising expenditure during the first quarter of 2007, as compared to 2006.

“Europe is anti’ american”

The European union’s very mission and purpose looks flawed, and it’s high time America realizes this fact

Only in part. To be more precise, yes, the animating spirit of the EU is anti-American. But this is an elite pathology much more than a popular one. Then again, the EU is a project, par excellence, of Europe’s elites. For decades, Europe’s leaders have explicitly said that voters don’t know what’s best for them; that the leaders will build a united Europe and people will come to like it. When they put their proposed constitution to popular vote & the French & Dutch rejected it, they were shocked. How dare voters do that? This European “arrogance of power,” with its fundamentally antidemocratic underpinnings, is something many Americans find hard to understand. Europe’s political class returns the compliment by finding America’s robust & genuine democratic traditions dreadfully vulgar.

4Ps B&M felicitates India’s 100 most valuable brands & top 30 automobile brands
There was a time when the number of brands in the Indian market place could be counted on one’s fingertips. No more! Liberalization and globalization have completely revolutionized the life and times of the Indian consumer, with a plethora of brands, both domestic and international, vying for shelf space. Recognizing the increasing power of brands in the Indian market place, 4Ps Business & Marketing (4Ps B&M), in association with The Indian Council of Market Research (ICMR), last year instituted the “India’s 100 Most Valuable Brands” award, published as an annual feature in a special issue of the magazine. Like last year, this year too 4Ps B&M organized a special function on 24th August 2007, to give away the awards to the most deserving brands, which have made momentous efforts to endear themselves to consumers over the past one year.
