Double-O-Seven Spy Gay...Or At Least Bisexual?

Behind the shadow of their blissful lives were the greatest loves of their lives, persons of the same sex as themselves. Where there were many for Dean – such as director Rogers Brackett and his close pal William Bast – actor Wally Cox was Brando’s soul mate, whose ashes he saved for 30 years and were finally scattered along with his own. Bond's almost the last word in style with his perfectly cut tuxedos; any guy who passes him a second glance could be readily excused!

That most of his relationships are backed by vested interests and his involvement with the majority of the ladies exists merely at a superficial level be an indication of his cleverly disguised sexual orientation? Could he through his dogged pursuit of the fairer sex, like many before him, be attempting to convince himself of his heterosexuality and thus also avoiding public scrutiny? Is the Double- O-Seven spy gay… or at least bisexual? What say Mr. Fleming?

TATA: A TIMELESS JEWEL

IF WORLD-CLASS NEEDED AN INDIAN SYNONYM...
In the era of post-license Raj, when many business conglomerates were forced to bid adieu to the corporate sector, the legendary Tata group withstood it all. The man behind the scenes was Ratan Tata, who took over from J. R. D. Tata in 1991. First on the target was the culture of the organisation that was institutionalised in the organization since its birth. The relation between the management and employees witnessed a see-saw change – it became more of a practical than a munificent one. To safeguard Tata’s interests within these companies, Ratan decided to raise the conglomerate’s stake (through parent holdings) in all the group companies to minimum 26%. With Ratan sitting at the helm of Tata, an era of corporate management came up.

JET SET TO GO!

The skies have finally opened for Jet Airways after the US Department of Transport cleared Jet to operate flights to America. The clearance comes as a suo-motu action by the US after consulting the US embassy and the CIA on security concerns. With initiation of operational discussions with the Federal Aviation Administration next on its agenda, Jet is well on its way to lock horns with established players like the American Airways, Continental Airways, US Airways, British Airways and Lufthansa in New York and San Francisco sectors.

GREASEPAINT IN GREECE

Where else could the screen gods and goddesses look better than in the very land of the most beautiful pantheon from mythology itself?! Sandy beaches, clear luminous waters, rocky mountains with flowerbeds, evocative archaeological sites, tranquil countryside, effervescent nightlife… it’s all there in Greece. Particularly in its cosmopolitan and pulsating capital, Athens, the dream merchants could choose to capture for their canvases anything from restaurants, cafes, theatre galleries, high-end shopping experience, taverns, wineries or simply quiet open spaces. Surrounded by the Aegean, Ionian and the Mediterranean Seas, some of its must-stop-overs are the Mykonos, Paros and Santorini islands collectively constituting the Cyclades but each with its distinctive flavour and character ‘For Your Eyes Only’! LTTE

Tamils might need more recognition in Sri Lanka, but LTTE, with its unwavering violence oriented responses on the whole, has never done any good to their cause. Examples in south and west Asia have clearly shown how violent techniques to demand even justifiable rights have resulted in stand-off positions spreading over decades. Democracy has always provided the most wonderful structures for minorities to reclaim rightful privileges, and in the shortest time. Sri Lanka is surely not an autocracy, and still runs on the very tenets that democracy stands for. LTTE has been repeatedly provided the opportunity to undertake collective bargaining and democratic negotiation; offers which have been repeatedly spurned due to extremely myopic fears of losing out on territories gained till now. LTTE, and of course the Sri Lankan government, should realise that the straightforward solution to resolving the current conflict is in a few magic words – literacy, healthcare support, employment opportunities, improvements in per capita income and standards of living. Pray tell us, how tough can that be, compared to the billions of dollars wasted by both sides on war?

DEAL OUT, BUT CASH IN!

After its failed takeover of Sahara Airlines in June 2006, it all seemed as though Naresh Goyal’s Jet Airways is all set to lose both the deal and the money deposited in the escrow account with ICICI Bank for violating the terms of the contract. However, the Bombay High Court on September 22, 2006 allowed the air liner to withdraw the sum of Rs.15 billion with dual conditions of agreeing to furnish bank guarantees against this sum and paying-up the interest amount of Rs.1 billion to Sahara Airlines. This, however, proves a breather for Jet Airways who can now utilise the locked-up funds in new investments.

Bhavin Chheda, Head of Research, Pioneer Intermediaries elucidates, “At the moment, (gross) capacity of the Indian steel industry is just 35 MMT; (However) with GDP growth of 7-9% projected over the next few years, and on the back of big ticket investments lined up in infrastructure, power and real estate, the industry looks very promising.” In anticipation of the emerging threat ,Tata Sons decided to hike its stake in Tata Steel by 10%, raising its shareholding in the company to 30.04%, besides going ahead with a prodigious capex of Rs.700 billion.

SBI ATMS

It has a mind boggling network of 9,177 branches, and 5,590 ATMs across the country; and for starters, to be the most profitable bank in the B&E Power 100 ranking, perhaps required not too much of effort! The change actually started in the mid ‘90s, when SBI forced itself through a professional makeover process with; the obsession was so much that SBI even appointed McKinsey & Co. to observe their century-old processes and recommend the necessary changes to facilitate faster decision making. Not necessarily to the credit of the much criticised McKinsey, SBI’s transformation has been truly tremendous.

4Ps TAKE : An aspirational headline, combined with a striking B&W visual, equals a winning communication for potential ICICI Platinum Card holders. The power idea is to convince the target audience (in this case high net worth individuals) that ICICI’s Platinum Card offers you the exclusivity reserved for the privileged. YOURS GLOBALLY, ‘GHANDI’!

(Just in case you spotted a spelling error in the headline above, don’t be perturbed, it’s intentional!)
After her break-off with Brad Pitt, when Jennifer Aniston sported T-shirts with Mahatma Gandhi’s messages written on them, why did it make so much news? Was it because of Aniston or Gandhi? Maybe they made a saleable combo! On the fifth anniversary of 9/11, while the world was busy debating the future of terrorism, India celebrated Gandhi’s first call of non-violence in Johannesburg against white colonial rule. Its relevance in today’s violent world managed to sneak into the global news agenda. As India tries hard to establish its identity in the global fashion circuit, Khadi is popular as Gandhi’s style statement.

4Ps TAKE : After bringing out many facets of diverse Indian states in their previous campaigns, Madhya Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage and its jungles are next on the Incredible India campaign’s hit list. The ad positions the state brilliantly as an adventurer’s paradise and a history lover’s delight through a painstakingly crafted body copy. DRESS UP EVERYBODY... LEAVE THE PETS OUT

That’s what’s going on! The classic management mantra of segmentation is being practised with panache by retailers, who are targeting almost all possible segments under the sun! “We have always delivered high-class global quality; and as it’s made in India, so it’s quite economical too,” boasts Rajiv Pal, General Manager-Marketing, Digjam, a giant in the CEO power dressing segment. But the truth is that it’s actually not the CEO power dressing segment that’s making waves (though the traditional giants Raymond, Digjam and the current stalwarts Madura Garments – remember Bipasha in ‘Corporate’ – are staking up their focus here). Vindicates Namita Chhetri, all India head, ICMR, Planman Consulting, “With 30% Indians aged below 15 years, the Rs.130 billion kids prêt-a-porter space is one of the most profitable playgrounds for apparel behemoths.” And this segment is already showing almost 20% growth rates (KSA Technopak estimates).

WHAT ABOUT THE SCHUMIS?

Car penetration rates in India have been one of the lowest in the world – 7 per 1,000 people. Clearly, there is a lot of aspiration to own a car. Compact cars have been at the forefront, selling 221,598 units in April-July 2006-07 alone (growth of 31.26%). Capacity expansion plans by all players indicate immense positivity regarding sales growth. Cars like the Honda Jazz and Chevrolet UV-A are due for launch. But technically, total car sales still form around 10-12% of motorcycle sales in India. The sector is further aided by easy financing. Will the two sectors come at loggerheads at some point? Prasad Narasimhan, VP Marketing, TVS, disagrees, “A bike is an aspirational product. I think the buyers for the two products (bikes & cars) are vastly
different.”

Innovative scripts, like the patriotic (and patricidal) hit Rang de Basanti, the invective-laden Omkara or the unglamorous (to be released) Kabul Express starring John Abraham are finding supporters. With the likes of Aishwarya Rai and Rani Mukherjee joining these enterprising actors and eschewing the glam quotient (remember ‘Raincoat’ and ‘Black’?) and now Kareena, as a small-town maid in ‘Lajjo’, the actors too are maturing and the audience finds itself spoilt for choice as Bollywood delivers one movie better than the last.

Real Estate On High

The number of bookings for homes increases by a significant number.” In order to lure consumers, real estate companies offer various tantalizing schemes like heavy discounts & various innovative offerings. And those worried about interest rates can take heart, since banks will go all out to lend a hand. The last festival season saw banks reducing housing loan rates despite hardening of interest rates & diminishing margins. Additionally, realtors are eager to be fully loaded this time to make up for the loss this year on account of interest rate hikes and cancellations of many projects, mainly in Tier II cities.

McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Barista...

Indian corporations surely seem to be in the know of phenomenal gumption and confidence to fight foreign brands on home-turf. Retail is surely in! On the food front, while McDonald’s has already invested Rs.800 crores, it plans to invest an additional Rs.300 crores in the next three years and open at least 100 more outlets! While no MNC has been able to stand up to the might of Amul, the company is taking no chances and it too has expansion plans up its sleeve and plans to increase its ice-cream outlets from 60,000 to 80,000 this year. Not to be left behind, Shopper’s Stop has been keeping an eye on the changing food habits of youngsters and is planning to set up food carts, which would give tough competition to the likes of McDonald’s, Pizza Hut & Barista etc. With almost everyone planning huge expansion plans, what exactly are the various factors that are key to operating a successful retail chain? Especially given the fact that retail is a “people oriented” business, and the way one interacts with customers is of paramount importance – the customer of today is very aware, very discerning; he is more demanding and winning his loyalty is tough – so how do you keep them flocking in?

IIPM-Publications:- LOCATION

If there are three things to keep in mind while opening a retail outlet, they would be (1)Location! (2)Location! (3)Location! Yes, that’s how important it is. While there perhaps can be no location better than Oxford Street for a retailer to ensure that people pop in at least once to take a look, Wal-Mart, on the other hand, located itself in small towns – which none of the other big retailers were targeting – and soon became a roaring success. In straightforward terms, the outlet’s location should be within easy distance of the target audience. ITC made its e-chaupals highly successful by locating themselves near their target audience – the villagers who earlier had no shopping opportunities. The corollary is that one needs to understand extremely well the demographic profile of customers residing within the geographical area in consideration. Simply said, open a high-end store in the high-end part of a town; and a low-end one, in the low-end part. Take time to choose the right location. It’s worth it!

Nuclear-Family-In Nuclear-Meltdown

Both halves of this euphemism manifest themselves here. Meet Marshall and Joyce Harriman, a brace of conjugal jihadis embodying the nuclear-family-in nuclear- meltdown. All out of love and in the throes of an acrimonious divorce they wrangle, when like a bolt from the blue life comes thundering down the luckless Twin Towers. On a warm summer morning, Joyce makes a beeline for Newark Airport to catch a flight to San Francisco (the doomed United Flight 93) and Marshall trudges to his office in the World Trade Center. She misses boarding the flight, and he’s late for work, but in a city soon wrecked by devastation with millions venting their angst and trepidation at this cruel throw of dice, each believes the other to be deceased, furtively (and wickedly) jubilant at this unforeseen bounty showered their way! Nevertheless, serendipity does not strike at the dawn of epiphany.

Ethanol From Sugarcane

Brazil, China, India and Thailand have started to produce Ethanol from sugarcane that can be mixed with costly gasoline to ease the energy burden of consumers. Transport companies focus on bio diesel, produced from rapeseed in the European Union, soybeans in the USA and vegetable oils in Malaysia and the Philippines. India tries to substitute diesel with a liquid from Jatropha and Karanja plants and has come to the point where ethanol fuel is sold at more or less the same price of conventional gasoline. According to a recent World Bank study, Indian ethanol sells between Rs.19.75 and Rs.22.50 per litre. This compares to city gas prices of Rs.21 and maybe Rs.30 and more by year-end, depending on the geopolitical energy situation.

'One-China Policy'

While China weighs the move as being against the ‘One-China Policy’, the American initiative is actually for the neutralisation of the Taiwan Straits and keeping the Taiwanese golden goose (GDP – $324 billion; forex – $225.8 billion; 2005) outside the reach of the PRC. The American move to contain China would obviously be countered by the increased association of China with Iran & Russia; and aggressive diplomatic parleys in the Central Asian States. But for the near future, Taiwan would certainly continue the life of an international pariah (only 25 countries recognise it & have diplomatic relations with it) even if courted by the lone super-power, US.

Today, nations that were members of the Soviet Union’s Warsaw Pact, as well as some of the former Soviet Republic’s countries, that we used to call captive nations, are valued members of NATO and represent some of our most stalwart allies in the war on terror. This did not happen by accident or by chance. Looking forward, I am convinced that if we have the wisdom, courage, and strength to adjust long-standing strategic arrangements, embrace new partners, and, above all, persevere in the face of adversity and difficulty, we will see a similar victory in this long war against violence and extremism and the other threats that may emerge in an uncertain new century.

    ‘Cola’teral Damage (IIPM-News Article)

    Cola War

Perhaps the only grey cloud, in an otherwise clear sky for cola giant Coca Cola could be the frequent charges of environmental hazards and management malpractices against it. Named the world’s most valuable brand for the last three consecutive years by the Interbrand BusinessWeek report, Coca Cola’s reputation has been severely hampered by these accusations. The public onslaught began with the Columbia imbroglio, when Coca Cola was charged with conniving with paramilitary forces to torture and kill workers and union leaders at the Coca Cola bottling plant. A case of human rights violation was filed in 2001. Following a massive public outrage, the University of Michigan and 23 other universities suspended their contracts with Coca Cola (which were renewed in April 2006). Apart from workers rights abuses, Coca Cola also faces allegations of causing ground water depletion and environmental damage in its plants in several countries. In particular, Coca Cola faces the strongest protests due to its plant in Kerala, India due to which the plant was shut down. This verdict has surely rocked the Coca Cola boat which was set to sail smoothly. Perhaps that’s the price Coca Cola has to pay for being so high profile.

This is despite the Creative Technology MP3 players being comparable to the iPods in terms of quality, features and price, if not better.

Public Sector insurance companies (PSUs), despite their venerable existence in the insurance zone, are trailing behind as consumers lose their belief in them on an inch by inch basis. It’s not surprising then, that PSUs find themselves at the bottom- half of the ladder in home, health, motor and life insurance sectors. All this can be attributed to their sluggish in-house remedial mechanism, and the equally discourteous manners of their employees.
